With the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicking off in a year’s time, Canada and Jamaica will meet in Toronto’s BMO field on Tuesday in their first preparation match ahead of the confederation’s most important competition.

In 2013, the Canadian Soccer Federation decided to hire Spanish manager Benito Floro as the national team’s head coach, aiming to improve the country’s performance in international competitions; including the World Cup qualifiers.

Recent results haven’t been what they were expecting but at least Canada seems to have found a style of play, which could be developed towards the future. On Tuesday, they will have the opportunity to show that they are up for the challenge of moving up in the FIFA rankings as they currently stand in 122nd position.

A different case is the one of Jamaica, a team that has reached the final ‘Hex’ several times but hasn’t qualified to the World Cup since their only appearance in France 1998. Currently ranked 85th in the world, they will look to win the match and get some points to improve their seeding ahead of the qualifying campaign for Russia 2018.

Canada is expected to feature a starting eleven including MLS stars Dwayne de Rosario, Kyle Bekker and Patrice Bernier, while European-based players like David Edgar, Atiba Hutchinson and Marcus Haber are also expected to start on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Jamaica would also feature a couple of MLS players in their starting line-up, with Vancouver Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks leading the offensive line. Under manager Winfried Schafer, Jamaica will look to get back to winning ways after an 8-0 humiliation against France last June.

Canada and Jamaica last met in 2010 in a friendly match in Kingston, won 1-0 by the ‘Reggae Boyz”. Apart from that, Canada has a positive overall record against Jamaica, with seven wins, four draws and four loses.
