Certainly this was not something that German and Borussia Dortmund supporters wanted to see.
Fresh off recovering from an ankle injury that cost him a chance to feature in the World Cup, Dortmund's star attacker Marco Reus ended up on the losing end of a tangle with one of Scotland's defenders and had to be substituted out as a result.
Even more disconcerting is the fact that the incident occurred as the game was winding down and the 25-year-old was seen clutching the very same ankle that required ligament surgery earlier this summer.
Not a good sign: Reus in visible distress after a rough tackle against Scotland
Naturally, die Mannschaft coach Jochen Low was quick to downplay the seriousness of the injury, yet nonetheless admitted that it was a waiting game until the speedy attacker had been properly assessed.
"[Although] it doesn't seem too bad, we still have to wait and see what happens [after he's been examined]," he told reporters after his side's 2-1 victory thanks to a brace from Thomas Muller.
Reus had just recovered from ankle ligament surgery only to now suffer another setback
And, naturally, given the Dortmund star's popularity, social media started buzzing.
Feel sad for #Reus. Get well soon @woodyinho, hope it isn't that bad. #Germany won 2-1 over Scotland! #GERSCO pic.twitter.com/TT50fulpKP

#Loew did not say "Doesn't look too bad.." he said "Doesn't look as bad as [the last time]" which could still mean BAD! #Reus #translation
