After a disappointing exit from this year’s World Cup in Brazil, Spain start their European title defending campaign against Macedonia on Monday.

Spain will face Macedonia on Monday with the hopes of getting back to winning ways following a disastrous World Cup campaign in Brazil and a discouraging 1-0 defeat against France in a friendly match on Thursday. The match will take place in Valencia at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium.

Vicente Del Bosque is looking to make a successful transition towards the future after players like Xavi, Xabi Alonso and David Villa have retired from international duty. For this purpose, the Spanish manager has brought in new players like Mikel San José, Dani Carvajal and Raúl García, who earned their first cap with the national team midweek.

Ahead of Monday’s night match, Manchester City midfielder David Silva commented:

“I don’t see a reason to change our style, we have won two European Championships and one World Cup with this style so I don’t see why should we change it.

“We are probably not creating the chances we used to but we are working to improve and recover our form.”

Diego Costa got injured during the match against France and won’t be available for selection on Monday. The Brazilian-born Spaniard hasn’t fully recovered from a hamstring injury in his left thigh and had to be replaced in the squad by youngster Munir El Haddadi. With Costa out of the squad, Del Bosque might start with Paco Alcácer as the striker was part of the starting line-up during a training session on Saturday.

Currently in 76th position in the FIFA rankings, Macedonia has never made it to a major competition. Apart from that, Bosko Gjurovski’s squad has just scored four goals since their last victory against Wales a year ago.

These nations last met in 2009 in a friendly match commemorating the 100-year football anniversary in Macedonia. Goran Pandev scored twice during the first half to give his country a 2-0 lead but Spain managed to make a second half comeback and win 3-2 with goals from Fernando Torres, Gerard Piqué and Albert Riera.

Spain and Macedonia are part of group C along with Ukraine, Slovakia, Belarus and Luxembourg.
