2010 World Cup: USA-Ghana – Landon Donovan’s Time For Revenge

Angela Asante, June 25 2010,
Landon Donovan never imagined he would fail to lead the USA past the group stages of the 2006 World Cup – especially not at the expense of Ghana in such a dramatic and disappointing manner.

Ahead of the tournament in Germany, Donovan had revealed in an interview that the USA were eying three ‘obvious’ points against debutants Ghana to ease their passage into the next round. Contrarily to the American’s imagination, the Black Stars brought down his team in what was a do-or-die match for both sides.

How the USA got knocked out by Ghana

After losing 3-0 to the Czechs, the USA bounced back with an eventful 1-1 draw against the Azzurri to earn a single point from two Match-days. The Ghanaians, meanwhile, had shocked the world by defeating the Czech Republic to recover from their loss against Italy on Day 1.

Therefore, when USA and Ghana met, the need to win was at its climax for both teams. Ghana took the lead through Dramani. Clint Dempsey got a goal for the Americans which looked well offside.

But Appiah’s controversial match-winner from the spot kick had sealed the Africans’ qualification into the knock-out stages. So the USA were out, and they just had to face it. There was no turning back. Going home was their fate. Total disgust for Landon Donovan.

“That wasn’t a good day for me and my team,” the American said ahead of Saturday’s game as he recalled their 2-1 defeat against Ghana in the 2006 World Cup.

It’s time for Donovan – who heroically fired the USA on top of Group C for a battle against Ghana – to inspire his team to victory as he eyes for revenge. See Match Review
