The Argentinian midfielder arrived from Liverpool in 2010, being recognized as one of the most versatile players with Los Blaugranas

Javier Mascherano and FC Barcelona will extend their relationship for at least four more years. The midfielder signed today his new contract, valid until June 2018 with an extension clause for one more, depending on the player’s performance.

The club and “El Jefecito” had agreed on terms prior to the World Cup held in Brazil, but with La Liga already started, Barcelona insisted the player to sign as soon as possible. After signing his new contract, Mascherano spoke to the press:

"I'm committed to this club until the final day of the contract. I hope I can live up to expectations of the club. I'm really happy to be in this great club and be part of a squad with such great players. Let's hope things go really well for us this season. We're looking forward to this season after some difficult times last campaign," he said.

Mascherano has won two La Liga championships, one UEFA Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA SuperCup for Barcelona, and will have a buyout clause of 100 million euros.
