The U.S. international star signs with the MLS and joins New England Revolution after a 'blind draw' decided his fate.
After several weeks of rumors and speculations a deal has finally been agreed between the MLS and Jermaine Jones. The 32-year-old will join New England Revolution after signing an 18-month contract worth $4.7 million, according to reports. The club confirmed the news on Sunday via its website and Jones will remain as the only Designated Player of the ‘Revs’ for the rest of the season.

During the past weeks, rumors linking Jones with the MLS circulated and Chicago Fire was expected to be the club he would join but at the end the player ended up being selected for the 'Revs' after the MLS decided to take an unprecedented blind draw to decide his future. As per league regulations, only Chicago Fire and New England Revolution were eligible to sign the player.

Chicago Fire head coach Frank Yallop expressed his disappointment after knowing the outcome of the draw.

“While we're deeply disappointed that he will not be a part of the Fire, we respect the system employed by MLS and wish Jermaine well with his new club. This result does not alter our vision of building a complete side and we'll continue to move forward with this process as planned.”

Born in Germany but raised in Chicago, Jones has made 46 appearances with the USMNT and has scored three goals with the national team. He featured in all of the USMNT matches during the World Cup, scoring a brilliant goal against Portugal.

The 33-year-old has spent most of his career playing in Germany with the likes of Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt. In January 2014 he signed a short-term contract with Turkish club Besikitas where he made 10 appearances.

“I’m very excited to come to MLS and join the Revolution,” Jones commented. “New England is an exciting team on the rise, and I believe I can come in and help the team make a push toward MLS Cup. Playing with the U.S. National Team has given me a great connection with the American fans and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them every weekend. I’m ready to get started with the Revs.”

Via Twitter, Jones expressed his excitement of joining his new club.
