The Mexican midfielder has been linked to Portuguese side Benfica during this transfer season, but the Dutch team appears to have the upper hand.

After Sunday’s match against Ajax, PSV Eindhoven’s coach Philip Cocu admitted his club has started negotiations to hire Mexican Andres Guardado from Valencia.  The Dutch head coach expressed his thoughts on why Guardado can come handy for PSV’s cause:

“Guardado is a multi-functional player; he can play several spots on the pitch. We could use a player with lots of skills, just like him. I have to admit we are working on having him play for us,” Cocu admitted at a press conference.

However, Cocu made it clear that, even though Guardado is prepared to play for the Eindhoven side, there are still some issues to be clarified with Valencia, so the transaction can be completed before the end of the week.

“Right now I can’t say if we’ll have him play for us. We spoke with him and he is excited to come, but it’s not just about him and us. We still have some things to work out with Valencia, so we will have to wait and see,” he added.

Sources indicate Guardado will be at the clubhouse for his physical tests today, so the agreement can be announced on the evening. The midfielder would arrive on loan from Valencia, becoming the third Mexican player to enroll with Eindhoven after Carlos Salcido in 2006 and “Maza” Rodriguez back in 2008.
