After a 1-1 draw in the first-leg, Atlético de Madrid took advantage of its home turf and defeated arch-rivals.

It was a thrilling and entertaining derby between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Supercopa at the Vicente Calderon stadium on Friday. Apparently the high amount of money spent by Real Madrid to sign the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodríguez wasn’t enough to beat a low-budget team like Atlético.

Both clubs tried hard to win the trophy but at the end Atlético de Madrid’s excellent tactical display secured the first silverware of the season for ‘Los Colchoneros’.

Atlético took an early lead just two minutes after the initial whistle when the Croatian Mario Mandzukic took a right-footed cross-shot to the bottom left corner of Iker Casillas.

After the goal, Real Madrid took possession of the ball and went forward trying to get the equalizer but Atletico’s defensive work denied all of Real’s efforts; including shots from Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Karin Benzemá. James Rodríguez also had a couple of chances but Atlético’s goalkeeper Miguel Moya denied him as well.

Diego Simeone was sent off in the 26th minute after arguing with the linesman. Below his reaction after being sent off.

The second half went a bit differently. With Cristiano Ronaldo coming in, Real Madrid improved and created even more chances but at the same time they started leaving open spaces in the back that Atlético almost capitalized on.

Luka Modric was also sent off after getting his second yellow in the 90th minute.

Atlético de Madrid won their second Spanish Super Cup in the club’s history.
