Chicago Fire seems to have taken the lead to sign Jermaine Jones for the rest of the 2014 MLS season.

After an impressive display with the United States national team during this year’s World Cup in Brazil, Jermaine Jones is set to sign for the Chicago Fire in coming days. Different sources have confirmed the interest from the Chicago club to get his services as they keep their hopes to reach a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jones featured in all of the USMNT matches during the World Cup, playing as a center midfielder with defensive tasks. Early this year, the 33-year-old signed a short-term contract with Turkish club Besikitas where he made 10 appearances. His contract had an option to extend it until 2016 but at the end the player didn’t stay with the Turkish side and instead became a free agent, raising the rumors of a potential move to the MLS.

A couple of weeks ago, Chicago Fire’s head coach Frank Yallop confirmed that they were interested in signing Jones and that he even had a conversation with the German-American player.

“I spoke to Jermaine yesterday and wanted to put forward our club and what we thought of him and we would love [for] him to join us.”

On Wednesday, Chicago Fire’s midfielder Razvan Cocis also commented on Jones’ potential move.

“He’s an experienced player, and he’s going to be helpful for the team. He played in the World Cup, so he should bring something different to the team. I think one of the most important things we need to bring here is a more fighting spirit, a don’t-give-up mentality. We never give up, but now in this situation we need some support and something to keep us there.”

The transfer is expected to be confirmed by the end of this week.
