Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of €20M. The 24-year-old’s arrival also confirms Nani’s loan move to his former club.

There is virtually no time for Marcos Rojo to settle in England with his new team mates. As the club’s hashtag on Twitter confirmed, ‘Rojo is Red’. With the 2014/15 campaign having already started, expectations could not weight heavier as he has been handed Rio Ferdinand’s vacated number 5 jersey.

Rio left big shoes to fill but manager Louis van Gaal is confident that his latest signing – tied to Old Trafford until 2019 – can live up to the challenge:

“Marcos is a very gifted defender. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back,” the Dutch manager explained.

“He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team.”

MUTV quoted Rojo as saying:

“It is such an honour to say that I now play for Manchester United.”

He added:

“I am young and am very keen to continue to learn the game, so playing for such an experienced technical coach as Louis van Gaal is a fantastic opportunity for me. I have joined United to work hard with my team-mates to win trophies and I know that the manager shares that ambition.”

Manchester United lost their opening game of the 2014/15 season 2-1 at home to underdogs Swansea City. They will be hoping to solve defensive problems with the arrival of Marcos Rojo. Meanwhile, Red Devils fans are still anxiously awaiting for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria to add his name to the list of great Argentine signings after Carlos Tevez and now Rojo.

Rojo helped Argentina reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup final in Brazil. Will he be reunited at Old Trafford with Man United transfer target Di Maria?
