Despite claims from Liverpool that they received the full release clause for former striker Luis Suarez, Barcelona insist they paid far less for the Uruguayan

La Liga giants Barcelona pulled out all the stops to lure former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez to Camp Nou, paying big money to sign last season's English Premier League top-scorer.

Despite being involved in yet another biting incident during this summer's World Cup, sinking his teeth into Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, the third strike for the South American forward in his professional career, the Catalan side were still adamant on acquiring his services.

Shortly afterwards, Suarez was a Blaugrana player. The cost to sign the 27-year-old was believed to be in the region of £75m, the release clause stipulated in the Uruguayan's contract with his former employers.

But now, according to Barcelona, the club paid a fee in a region far less than originally reported. Jordi Mestre, the club's executive vice-president, states that the Suarez deal in fact cost the Liga BBVA heavyweights £65m, £10m less than previously thought.

As written in the Daily Mail, Jordi Mestre was quoted as saying: "Suarez's clause was £75m and in the end we paid £65m thanks to the skill of those negotiating."

The player was unveiled at Cammp Nou last Tuesday, and made his unofficial debut for his new club in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Mexican side Leon Guanajuato on Monday, which Barcelona won 6-0.

Suarez, who's new release clause is valued at a staggering £160m, is not eligible to play in competitive matches for Barcelona until October 26, but has been permitted to train alongside his new team-mates after submitting an ban-reduction appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
