According to reports, Manchester United could miss out on signing one of their targets due to sudden interest from Germany.

The transfer window is nearing its last few weeks, and as a result, newspapers around the world have gone into overdrive with speculation where numerous players will be by September.

Roma's Mehdi Benatia has long been linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico, where he has largely impressed since arriving from Udinese last summer and was a key part of the Giallorossi's excellent performance in Serie A last season.

As a result, despite angry public denials from his present employers, the 27-year-old center back has been linked to a host of Europe's biggest clubs, namely Chelsea, Manchester United, and now most recently, Bayern Munich.

As per German publication Sport Bild, die Roten have apparently beaten the Premier League duo to securing the Morocco international's signature, with the Bundesliga giants being keen on quickly finding some reinforcements after Javier Martinez sustained a bad injury during the DFB Supercup earlier this week.

However, English reports point to Benatia being close to completing a £24 million move to Old Trafford:

Interestingly, despite Roma appearing not to be willing to sell, even Italian reports aren't too confident of the capital club being able to hold onto one of their prized assets.

They had linked him at one point with Chelsea and now also point to a potential "duel" between Bayern and Manchester United for his signature this summer.
