The Mexican defender will face his former team playing for Mexican champ León. After this game, Marquez will join Hellas Verona

Rafael Marquez will play his last game for León at Camp Nou. The Mexican back-to-back champion will play for the Joan Gamper trophy, starting FC Barcelona’s home season. The club informed on their website they will pay tribute to the Mexican defender, who played seven years for the blaugranas.

“FC Barcelona has a special tribute prepared for a player who served the club so well, helping it to two Champions Leagues, one European Super Cup, four Ligas, three Spanish Super Cups, one Spanish Cup and the Clubs World Cup,” as can be read in the club’s website.

Despite his age, Marquez managed to play in his fourth consecutive World Cup, and after this match he will be playing for his new club, Hellas Verona.

His presence at Camp Nou was in doubt, but given it’s a friendly match, Marquez confirmed he will be playing with León on Monday.

Leon spent ten years in Mexico’s second division (Ascenso MX), but came back in 2012 and just one year later achieved the first of back-to-back championships, with Marquez as captain.

“El Kaiser” is the only Mexican player to become champion in the French, Spanish and Mexican league.
