Already on Friday, Barca announced on its official website that they had reached an agreement to sign the ex-Ajax and Arsenal skipper on a five-year-deal. The Spanish powerhouse described Vermaelen as “a natural leader” who has “an impressive physique”, “is excellent with the ball at his feet and reads the game well.”
The 28-year-old Belgian passed his medical on Saturday and was toured around the Camp Nou. He is set to put pen to paper on Sunday morning. In the video below, Vermaelen is seen posing for the cameras in front of his new club’s crest.
He was quoted by Barca TV as saying that his goal is to quickly adapt in Spain. With Marc Batra, Javier Mascherano and summer signing Jeremy Mathieu, the addition of Thomas Vermaelen should boost coach Luis Enrique’s defensive options during the 2014/15 season.
