The Red Devils are preparing a massive money offer to get not just one, but two defenders this summer.

With the summer transfer window entering its last month, Manchester United, like many other clubs, are keen to make one final push to get as many of their targets as possible.

The Red Devils endured a nightmare campaign last season under David Moyes and are hoping to make that a distant memory under the leadership of Dutch tactician Louis Van Gaal. So far, they seem to be on their way as they enjoyed a successful pre-season in the United States that concluded with them lifting the International Champions Cup trophy.

Van Gaal is understood to be looking to add some backbone to his defense after the high profile departures of players like Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, and Nemanja Vidic and while Dortmund's Mats Hummels has been on his radar for some time, two other names have emerged recently.

According to English publication The Express, the former Oranje boss is preparing to spend upwards of £40 million to seal a double deal for Roma's Medhi Benatia and Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen.

75%--or £30 million--of that will go towards trying to get the Giallorossi defender, who is on the wishlist of other Premier League sides such as Chelsea, whereas the remainder will be applied towards trying to get league rivals Arsenal to sell their Belgian star.

Benatia has been the target of several Premier League sides after his excellent performances with Roma

However, neither side is keen to sell for different reasons--Arsenal would prefer not to allow yet another one of their key players leave for a direct rival. And as for Roma, the Italian side are making a return to the Champions League after a long absence and will be needing all the reinforcements they can get.
