Last season, Manchester City regained the league title, beating Chelsea and Liverpool to it. Arsenal, meanwhile, claimed their first trophy in nine years by clinching the FA Cup. They did so in style, beating Liverpool and Spurs en route to the title. Arsene Wenger found a hidden smile as well as a hidden desire to spend. After breaking the transfer record last season for Mesut Özil, he purchased Alexis Sanchez, Matthieu Debucy and a back up keeper in the form of David Ospina ahead of the new season.

They finally seem prepared to challenge for the Premier League title itself, having led the standings for a huge proportion of last season, only to fall away at the end. They were also humiliated by Chelsea and City during the course of the season. Arsenal has shown that when they believe in themselves, they can go toe to toe with the Premier League's top three. They definitely have what it takes to finish there as well.

This game will be the first real sight into how these two teams plan to set up in the coming season. Arsene Wenger rarely changes his system but, considering the number of excellent midfielders at Arsenal's disposal, he might decide to cater to their strengths. Manuel Pellegrini likes to stick to a philosophy too and has largely put his stamp on City. He will hope to earn City more than one trophy this season nonetheless.
