The two European heavyweights will clash at the Michigan Stadium in an International Champions Cup encounter on Saturday, the 2nd of August.

Last time the two teams met was in a fiery encounter as United and Madrid battled it out in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. The match was highlighted by a very controversial decision by the referee which saw Portugal international Luis Nani receiving his marching orders. Luka Modric’s late goal settled the tie as Real Madrid emerged victorious and qualified to the next round.

However this time around the two sides will meet in a friendly setting as Madrid look for their first win of the tournament. The European champions have endured a frustrating campaign so far. Los Blancos lost their first match to Inter Milan and were not able to get the better of AS Roma in their second match as Totti’s only goal of the match handed the Italian side a victory.

Real Madrid will now try to outsmart Man United’s new head coach Louis Van Gaal who has enjoyed a perfect start to life at new club. Under the tutelage of the former Bayern Munich boss, the Red Devils have won all their matches. They began the International Champions Cup on a strong note picking a 3-2 win over AS Roma.

United were unable to record any goals in their next outing against Inter Milan but eventually won 5-3 on penalties. Man United’s Dutch manager enjoyed a fine World Cup campaign with the Netherlands side deploying a 3-5-2 formation and wishes to introduce a similar philosophy at his new team.
United have responded well so far but their Spanish star Juan Mata believes that the team will have to work hard in order to get the desired results.

"The manager's new system could be very good for us," Mata said.

"Obviously we need to train more and improve but I think it's very difficult for opponents when we play like this. For me personally, playing behind two strikers is a great position to help me perform at my best level.

"The first thing the manager told us in pre-season training was that the first three months of this season would be hard, because we had to change our mindsets and understand what he was trying to do, and there was a new system as well."

"It will take time to fully adapt but, in the meantime, we are doing our best.”

"We're enjoying training and the most important thing is that we are learning from him, because he is a very experienced coach."
