Tottenham has hired and fired managers in recent seasons at an alarming rate. They feel they have found the right man this time in ex-Southampton coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino of course knows the game having been a very accomplished player himself in his playing days. Spurs failed to break the top four again last season under Tim Sherwood. Sherwood came in late in help the team to mount a challenge but they fell away, letting Arsenal take the final Champions League spot. Their purchases last season did not play as well as they had expected, especially Roberto Soldado.
Southampton meanwhile had an exceptional season by their standards last season, playing eye-catching football. They finished in the top ten. They troubled the big names. Pochettino could be the right man for Spurs. His first job will be to imprint his philosophy on the team. Spurs is surely going to play open and attacking football next season. He will need to improve the defense of the London club though. They looked shaky too many times last season under Sherwood. Sherwood also preferred an open approach but ran out of ideas at times.
Their opponent in the USA is the Seattle Sounders. The Sounders are the MLS' most popular club judging by attendance. They also have the most season ticket holders and the highest television ratings. With the fans cheering them on, Seattle will surely provide Spurs with plenty of headaches in this friendly.
Pochettino is set to test many things in the upcoming friendlies including who his striker should be. Spurs is yet to make any major signings yet. He might decide to do so before the season starts. He knows he will not have much time on his hands to steady the ship; the Spurs hierarchy is rarely patient with its managers.
