Having not found the net in the knockout stages of the competition, La Pulga remains behind Colombia’s James Rodriguez and Germany’s Thomas Mueller in the World Cup Golden Boot chart. However, a hat-trick could see him claim the prize at the delight of his supporters who can’t wait to witness signature moves from their idol.
Sunday’s encounter will not be enormous for Messi only. Millions of Argentina fans are praying for the wait to end as it has been 28 years since Maradona lifted’s the country’s second and final World Cup trophy. Javier Mascherano, whose incredibly solid performance against the Netherlands did not go unnoticed, summed up everyone’s voices by saying:
“There in the eyes of the world is our country, our flag, returning to a World Cup final. It’s a delight that lifts your soul. It’s something you can’t explain, it’s something I never imagined. I hope we can win on Sunday.”
“There’s always something left. It’s a final. It’s the most important match of our careers. I think the only thing we have to avoid is thinking about the scale of the situation.
“Germany are formidable. They have technique, potential, style. They beat Brazil so well. We’ll have to be very concentrated, not give them space. We know that, with space, they’re so dangerous.”
The Germans, meanwhile, want a repeat of the 1990 World Cup Final when a lone goal by Andreas Brehme broke the hearts of the Albiceleste. Since then, the DFB Eleven’s closest attempt to clinch the trophy occurred in 2002 but they finished as runners-up to Brazil. In the last two editions of the World Cup, Germany stumbled in the semi-finals but bounced back to win bronze medals.
Could there have been a better way for Joachim Loew’s side to break its semi-final hoodoo than by trouncing the host nation 7-1 on Wednesday? This year could well be their year to reduce the trophy count gap on five-time world champions Brazil, unless Argentina complete a bloody revenge mission, four years after suffering a 4-0 humiliation in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
