2010 World Cup: Cameroon 1-2 Denmark – Report

Angela Asante, June 19 2010,
Cameroon have been dumped out of the 2010 World Cup on a controversial note. Denmark have defeated them 2-1. Assou-Ekoto certainly should have been awarded a penalty minutes before the Danes broke away to score the game’s winning goal.

Cameroon vs Denmark, First Half: An Open Game

The Indomitable Lions took a positive approach from the start with Samuel Eto’o being more adventurous than he was throughout the game against Japan. Denmark were forced to draw back and defend but they were suddenly on the brink of catching Cameroon by surprise as Rommedahl beat the offside trap only to fire his shot with too much power which of course resulted in a goal kick.

At the other end, C. Poulsen made an unforgivable mistake at the back as he cheaply gave the ball away to the Cameroonians. Captain Samuel Eto’o took his chance by punishing the Danes with a well taken 10th minute goal. His celebration seemed to prove his pride for his homeland and his aim to go places with his team in the 2010 World Cup.

Later on, Gronkjaer had a dangerous attempt on goal but his opposite number made a good clearance as he headed the ball away for a corner which Denmark failed to take advantage of eventually. The danger had passed away for a while for the Cameroonians. Still, they had to be on their guard as the Danes tried to make the most of the right flank. In the meantime, the Indomitable Lions were inefficient inside Denmark’s 18 yard box – Emana standing out as the player to blame for making poor passes and terrible shots on goal.

Denmark found relief at the 33rd minute through Rommedahl and Nicklas Bendtner’s combination. The number 19 player beat the offside trap once again before squaring the ball to the Arsenal man who slided it across the goal line. Denmark were deservingly leveled with Cameroon at 1-1. The game transformed into a ping pong battle within the last five minutes of the first half. Rommedahl should have put Denmark into the lead after being played in by Nicklas Bendtner. Emana should have equally scored moments later for Cameroon. With all the chances that fell, mainly in the way of Cameroon, the first period ended all square.

Cameroon vs Denmark, Second Half: Goodbye CameroonCameroon's Assou Ekotto fouled by a Denmark player.

As soon as the Cameroonians touched the ball to kick-off the second half, they applied the same attacking game plan which saw them dominate above the Danes in the first period. M'Bia scared Denmark’s goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen with a flashing header while Assou-Ekotto should have done better from a yard than just going down easily. In truth, it seemed like Cameroon should have been awarded a penalty as Assou-Ekotto's legs were clearly fouled.

On the hour mark, Assou Ekotto delivered a great cross from the left to Webo who was waiting around the penalty spot but nothing good came out of this open chance. Quickly after, Denmark broke away and the game’s best player, Rommedahl, finally had his name on the scoring sheet. He drifted from the right hand side of the penalty area before coolly placing the ball at the back of the net to offer the Danes a 2-1 lead. While Coach Paul Le Guen was gesturing in frustration on the sidelines, his men kept wasting a whole lot of chances to get back into the game.

Chances over chances went missing as Cameroon lost 2-1 to Denmark. The Indomitable were easily tamed by the Danes in the end. They’ve been thrown back into their den. Cameroon are out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They have become the first victims in the tournament. There is no way they can get back into the competition even if they beat the Netherlands next as Denmark and Japan, who are both on 3 points, will compete against each other for the second qualifying spot in Group E.
