Suarez produced another controversial moment when he sunk his teeth into Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, and is now facing a lengthy punishment from FIFA

Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has been the subject of more controversy after the Liverpool forward bit Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The incident occurred while Italy were playing against the South American nation in the World Cup, a match which La Celeste won 1-0.

The Azzurri defender showed an apparent bite mark on his shoulder to Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez, but the match official opted against taking action against the 27-year-old attacker.

But now, football's governing body FIFA has announced they will be looking into the incident, telling Goal:

"We are awaiting the official match reports and will gather all the necessary elements in order to evaluate the matter."

"The Fifa Disciplinary Committee is responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials' attention. Furthermore, any type of proof may be produced, reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings."

Suarez, after the game, denied the incident, claiming occurrence like these happen on the pitch, stating: "These things happen inside the penalty area. We were chest against shoulder. I also immediately suffered a blow to the eye."

The Uruguayan national team coach Oscar Tabarez came to his superstar striker's defense, arguing that there is “clear animosity towards this player.”

"For me and for all Uruguayans there were more important things in this game. Perhaps [Suarez] made mistakes, however, it is the goal for some to write about him: you just have to focus on when he is on the field and play.”

News later broke that the two-time World Cup champions' all-time leading goalscorer was charged by FIFA and could face a lengthy ban from between two matches to 24 months.

This is not the first time Suarez has found himself in trouble after sinking his teeth into an opposing player as he has twice committed this action, once during his Ajax days and the later being the infamous bite on Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.
