England boss is set to axe many experienced stars for the Three Lions' last World Cup game against Costa Rica

The English national football team exited the 2014 World Cup early on in the tournament, crashing out in the group stage.

After falling to 2-1 losses in their first two games against Italy and Uruguay, accompanied by Costa Rica's 1-0 win over the Azzurri, a round of 16 qualification escaped from the Three Lions with one game to spare.

And now, as Roy Hodgson's side get prepared for their last game against Los Ticos, their 66-year-old manager revealed he will be giving his nation's youngsters a chance to appear on football's grand stage.

The former Liverpool and Fulham boss made a surprise decision to announce the staring lineup for Tuesday's game in a press conference for the match.

Nine changes in total were made with only Daniel Sturridge and Gary Cahill remaining from the original lineup, as Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw are set to make their first ever World Cup starts.

When talking about the Southampton and Everton stars, Hodgson said: “I’m looking for them to show their talent.”

“Both of them are very good passers of the ball, very good at running with the ball. Both, for young players, have good vision. That will improve the more games they play, but they’re well advanced for their age.”

“This is a chance for them to show they are good players. They have an opportunity to play from the start, and together in a game with other young players around them. They can show the faith and hope we have that those boys are ready to make their mark. This could be the first moment they give us an inkling that we are on the right track.”

Skipper Steven Gerrard received the axe and will hand his captain armband to ex-Chelsea star Frank Lampard. Hart will be replaced by Ben Foster whilst Jones, Smalling, Milner, Wilshere, and Lallana complete the squad for Tuesday.
