The CSKA Moscow playmaker was one of the standout players during the Euro 2012 and his national side will need a similar performance from him this time around.

The 23 year old burst into the international stage with a star performance during the Euro 2012, finishing the tournament as the joint top scorer.  He opened his account in the first game as his brace guided Russia to a 4-1 victory over Czech Republic. He followed it up with another goal against Poland, but despite his heroics Russia finished third in the group and were knocked out of the tournament in the first round only.

He soon became the most sought after player but despite his popularity the youngster failed to register a move to a big club. But Dzagoev has managed to improve his game from then onwards and this time with a few notable absentees in the Russian squad, a lot of responsibility will fall on the young shoulders of Alan Dzagoev.

Russian midfield maestro Roman Shirokov is one of the players who could not make the trip to Brazil. The 32 year old suffered a back injury prior to the commencement of the tournament and according to Vasily Berezutskiy, the man who will lead Russia during the World Cup Shirokov’s absence will be a big loss for his side.

''Of course, he is a big loss for us,'' said Berezutskiy.

''However, this Russia team is strong as a team, it's a collective effort. We shouldn't be fixated that his absence will affect us too much.''

Nonetheless Dzagoev’s presence can compensate for his captain’s loss. The 23 year has undeniable quality and has the ability to make the decisive pass in the final third and also has a knack for goals which will surely benefit his team. He was very instrumental as CSKA lifted the Russian Premier League title last time out and will need to continue his fine form, for his country to achieve any sort of success in the World Cup.
