Due to his very high salary, outside the means of Napoli, Pepe Reina will go back to Liverpool this Summer, says Benitez.

In a recent interview by Rafa Benitez to the English radio ‘Team Talk’, Napoli’s coach talked about the future of his Spanish keeper, on loan from Liverpool. Napoli had a rather disappointing season, finishing third, 7 points behind Roma and 24 points from Juventus, despite De Laurentiis spending over 100M to build a competitive team.

With regards to Pepe Reina, who came to Napoli on loan from Liverpool, Benitez said that he will likely have to go back to Liverpool and fight for a starting spot there. Napoli’s boss said:

“Pepe has a contract with Liverpool and I believe he will go back. We cannot afford a salary like his. Salaries in the Premier League are beyond our means.”

Reina had a very quiet and discrete season, winning only the Italy Cup, considered to be a lower tier trophy in Italy

Furthermore, Benitez talked about his own future. The Spanish manager feels welcome at Napoli, which he describes being similar to Madrid, where he was born. However, Benitez revealed:

“In the future, I would like to go back to England, where my family lives and where my children are studying.”

Benitez will likely leave Napoli next year to move back to England
