Could there be a better way for the United States to rehearse for their World Cup opener against the Black Stars than by clashing with Ghana’s eternal foes, Nigeria? USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who controversially left out American soccer icon Landon Donovan from his final 23-man squad, explained his mind ahead of Saturday’s crucial friendly against the Super Eagles. He stated:

“[There are] similarities [between Nigeria and Ghana] in terms of their style of play, in terms of their individual talent. They have very dangerous attacking players, which do a lot of work and make different decisions.

“They switch sides, they counter-break you very fast in transition offensively, they’re very fit, they’re very physical, which is good for us because it will give us a wake-up call.”

Looking ahead to USA’s World Cup 2014 opening game against Kwesi Appiah’s Black Stars on June 16, Klinsmann added:

“That gives us a little bit of an indication how to approach Ghana, how to beat Ghana, which is so crucial for us to start the World Cup with.”

This year, the Americans have netted exactly two goals in each of the international friendly matches where they avoided defeat. Statistics are decent and quite encouraging. Although they lost 2-0 to Ukraine and stumbled to a 2-2 draw against Mexico, they have bounced back with two consecutive wins – against Azerbaijan and Turkey, respectively. The biggest test of all ahead of the World Cup awaits them in the form of the Nigerians.

The current African champions are yet to record a win in 2014. They drew blank against Mexico in March and wrestled for a 2-2 draw against Scotland in the first of their three World Cup warm-ups. The second pre-tournament friendly ended goalless. There were positive signs, however, as the team looked more compact, aggressive and fast. All that was missing was a goal.

Stephen Keshi will be looking to boost the confidence of Nigerian fans back home by gunning down the United States at the EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.
