England takes on Honduras in a bid to be ready for the World Cup.

The high level of national pessimism might be exactly the antibiotic England requires to break their poor run of performances in international tournaments. Firstly, they will have to find a way past Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. Roy Hodgson has a few headaches to deal with. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere are out of the upcoming friendly against Honduras while Raheem Sterling, having earned a red card in his previous appearance for England, is suspended.

The match against Ecuador started differently than England had planned. Firstly, Ecuador took the lead within the first eight minutes, when one of the Premier League’s own, Antonio Valencia headed the ball into the back of the net after connecting with a wonderful cross from Walter Ayovi.

The equalizer from England was a scrappy one. Oxlade-Chamberlain set up an easy strike for Rickie Lambert; Lambert however hit the post. The rebound fell to none other than Wayne Rooney, who managed to squeeze the ball across the line.

England eventually took the lead. Ross Barkley played the ball through the opponent’s legs, twisted, turned and after managing to take out most of the Ecuadorian defense, passed the ball to Lambert. Lambert, who is 32 and is going to his first World Cup, hit the ball with plenty of venom from the right.

He scored what quite a few thought would be the winning goal. Lambert, only in 2007, celebrated promotion to League 2 with Bristol Rovers. He has worked hard at each level he has been promoted to. His hard work has culminated in him signing for Liverpool, his boyhood club. Unfortunately for Lambert though, his goal was not enough for England to win this match.

Ecuador’s Michael Arroyo surprised everyone when he moved the ball ever so slightly outside the penalty area to take it out of the reach of James Milner and Wilshere and struck it with venom. The goal was a thunderous one. Arroyo’s delight was matched by his manager; the match ended 2-2.

England’s opponents Honduras are coming into this one on the back of a 2-4 defeat to Israel. England should ideally be able to beat Honduras. However, matches are played on the pitch and not on paper. Can Honduras shock England?
