South Africa vs Uruguay – Ke Nako!Bafana Bafana may regret not to have opened their 2010 World Cup campaign with a victory at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg last Friday. In fact, all their efforts were matched by a Mexican side that was certainly as good as they were on the day. Perhaps 1-1 was a fair result in the end; the greatest relief for South Africa is that France and Uruguay also played out a draw in the Group’s other game.
So things remain the same in table as they were before the first Jabulani ball was kicked in this 2010 FIFA World Cup competition. The hosts know that they cannot afford to lose anymore points if they are to contend for a place in the last 16. After seeing Uruguay struggle to impress in their opener against France, Bafana Bafana will feel that they can get the best out of their South American counterparts come Wednesday.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup’s first goal author, Siphiwe Tshabalala, gave his thought about South Africa’s crucial match against Uruguay.
“The match against Uruguay is a must win game for us. We will be going out there to do our best and to make the nation proud because the people are behind us. We will definitely do better in this second game. The one against Mexico is part of the past. Our focus is now on Uruguay.
“We know that it will be tough but we are ready to make it count by fighting for the nation. The nerves are gone and we are looking forward to the next game with excitement. We just need to show hunger and zeal to fight as we stick to our normal game. We know that Uruguay are a ball playing team, with quality players like Diego Forlan.”
In fact, speaking of the Uruguayan striker, there is a sensation that he will only get better as the tournament goes on.
Forlan wasn’t at his peak against France but he still came close a
t a couple of occasion to inscribe his name on the tournament’s scoring sheet. The 2010 Europa League winner has the task of influencing his team to a great 2010 World Cup campaign and he will be keen to emulate what Mexico’s defender Rafael Marquez did against Bafana Bafana: score a goal.
Expect the game to be a close one with the Jabulani ball also playing tricks – not only to goalkeepers, but to strikers as well. Uruguay will have to raise up their performance, or demand luck from the skies if they are to survive the threat caused by South Africa’s key player Teko Modise. Besides Modise, Katlego Mphela is also a player that will have to be on Uruguay’s defensive radar. Mphela was just inches away from stealing all three points for Bafana Bafana on Friday in the last stages of the match, but he was denied by the post.
The forward has promised to make his mark against La Celeste Olimpica, so let’s watch out for him.
After all, Uruguay’s seems to be very much ready for this crucial encounter, and he shared his thoughts about it during a press conference on Tuesday.
“It is going to be very difficult and we know that. We know that if we win this game, we will be taking a giant step forward. The group is not a group of death, but it is one where any team could progress from. The story is yet to be written.”
