2010 FIFA World Cup: Australia Could Finish As Worst Team After Germany Loss

Isaac Asante, June 15 2010,
Australia began their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign in South Africa in a painful way as they lost 4-0 to Group D leaders Germany. Goals came from Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mueller, and Cacau; but now Australia do not only face the danger of being disqualified from the tournament in the group stage, but also do they face the danger of finishing their World Cup run as the competition’s worst team.

Australian fans, certainly, are hoping that the Socceroos’ shape does not go from bad to worse. Especially not in view of the fact that their last World Cup appearance 4 years ago was not as enjoyable as they were hoping it would be.

Following their merciless 4-0 loss to Germany, pointless country Australia take the bottom with -4 as their goal difference; while Ghana and Germany both have 3 points, living third place Serbia with 0 points, due to their 1-0 loss to the strong West Africans.

Australia – Bad behavior and standings in 2010 FIFA World Cup

Australia have a lot of areas to improve in their side, and among their numerous mistakes and lessons to target, they cannot omit their immature behavior. Although they found themselves as the less challenged team by opponents in the tournament as of June 15, Australia happen to be the third yellow card earner, and the first red card earner, according to statistics on FIFA.com. This goes without saying that they are also the top collectors of cards in the World Cup presently.

Yet, Australia’s main concern is all about standings. At this time, Australia have the worst statistics when it comes to table standings, as they are the ones with the greatest defeat in the 2010 FIFA World Cup so far. Nigeria, Greece, Algeria, Serbia, Cameroon, Denmark, and Korea DPR all have 0 points in their tables, but none of them has a goal difference as terrible Australia’s.

Australia – Getting Better In Next Games

“We have to win the next two games now; we need to score in the next two matches, that's for sure.” This is what Australian coach Pim Verbeek told FIFA.com after his side’s 4-0 deficit. Certainly, the Socceroos need to turn into a far better side against Ghana and Serbia, if ever they are to qualify into the Last 16 stage.

Australia captain Lucas Neil is confident ahead of his country’s remaining matches in Group D, and he openly expressed his dream to grab 6 possible points. Assuming they fail to accomplish their task, they might finish in 32nd position in the 2010 World Cup, but currently, with no encounters in Group H having been played yet, opponents can still wait before crowing Australia as the “Worst Team”; at least in match-day 1.
