Diego Simeone used to a terrific player himself before he became a coach. Today, we turn back the clock to Cholo’s days as a player as well as take a look at his coaching stats.

1) Diego Simeone played for Atletico Madrid between 1994 and 1997. He returned for a second spell in 2003 and continued until 2005. He made 134 appearances for them in total over two spells for them and scored 23 goals.

2) In total, the talented midfielder played for eight clubs including Inter Milan, Lazio and Sevilla. He was a tough defensive midfielder by trade.

3) Cholo came only ten short of reaching a 100 appearances for Lazio in Italy. He scored 15 goals during his spell there.

4) Diego Simeone played no less than 106 games for Argentina, scoring 11 goals in the process. He once held the record for having the most caps for his country. Currently, he is third on the list having been overtaken by Javier Zanetti and Roberto Ayala.

5) Simeone has managed seven clubs to date; amongst them five are based in Argentina. Before taking the Atletico Madrid job, his only foreign coaching experience came in Catania.

6) During’s Simeone’s first spell at Atletico Madrid, the club were hugely successful. 1996 will always remain a memorable year for the Argentine as he helped Atletico Madrid to a domestic double and earned a silver medal in the Olympics for his efforts for his country.

7) Simeone amassed the most trophies during his time at Lazio. Lazio, during their golden age between 1999 and 2000, won a total of four trophies. Simeone helped his side to an Italian domestic double, the Supercopa Italiana and the UEFA Supercup.

8) As a manager, he has won six trophies, four of which have come with Atletico Madrid. He will be looking to add to the tally today by winning the biggest prize on offer in European football.
