Mexico vs Honduras Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Sep 7th 2009
Mexico host Honduras at the Estadio Azteca on September 9th in another thrilling CONCACAF World Cup qualification match

Franco and Dos Santos celebrateEl Tri are currently experiencing sweet and memorable moments under Atletico de Madrid’s former manager Javier Aguirre. The newly crowned Gold Cup champions are definitely finding their form again as one of the region’s top teams.

After thrashing Costa Rica 3-0 last Saturday, Mexico jumped onto third in the six-team table whereas Costa Rica slipped from first to fourth.

Still, the Mexicans find themselves behind the new leaders USA and then Honduras which they’ll host on Wednesday.

As nothing yet is defined in the CONCACAF’S World Cup qualification zone, Mexico will hope to keep building on their mental and physical strength throughout the rest of the campaign.

Mexico’s current squad has considerably changed from the one that lost in Honduras earlier this year. In that game, three goals from Los Catrachos and a late red card for Carlos Salcido rounded up a miserable day for the Mexicans (managed by Sven Goran Eriksson at that time).

Wednesday’s match at the Estadio Azteca promises to show a different atmosphere and a different approach from Mexico.

Young player Giovanni dos Santos is once again expected to steal the show. The ex-Barcelona midfielder was on fire against Costa Rica on Saturday as he scored one goal and set the other two.

Meanwhile, Honduras have been continuing with their splendid form. Los Catrachos hHonduras' number nine strikerave now bagged three victories on the trot in the qualifiers after beating Trinidad & Tobago 4-1 last weekend.

For Honduras, Carlos Pavon is the man to watch for upfront. Pavon, who scored a brace on Saturday against T&T, was also on the scoring sheet in April when his country hosted Mexico in the first leg of Wednesday’s encounter.

In general, Mexico v Honduras is a game that anyone could win as both teams are very attacking-minded. However, if El Tri have the upper hand ahead of the clash, it is mostly due to the Estadio Azteca factor.
