Scotland vs Netherlands Match Preview

Angela Asante, Sep 7th 2009
Scotland play their last World Cup qualifier on Wednesday against the Netherlands who have already booked their place into the finals in South Africa.

Scotland concede against HollandVictory for Scotland is a must

Scotland badly need to clinch victory if they want to stand any chance of playing in the play-offs which includes the best eight runners-up of the nine groups in Europe.

Last weekend, Scottland surmounted fears with a dramatic 2-0 home win against Macedonia. Still, pressure persists as the Scottish have a negative goal difference with only 10 points from seven games.

Well, George Burley’s men are expected to give their last sight of breath against the Netherlands.

After that, they’ll have to wait and see whether a play-off place is available for them or not.
Above all, the question remains: Can Scotland beat Holland?

It looks like the Dutch have built a strong fortress since losing out to Russia in the European Championships last year. Van Persie, Kuyt, Huntelaar, Robben, Van der Vaart, and Sneijder among other stars are working wonders on the pitch for the Oranje.
It seems hard to see the Scottish defeating Holland despite benefiting from the home factor.

However, it is also true that with Scotland’s level of determination, an upset can be created on Wednesday.
In Scotland’s roaster, there will be Cardiff’s Gavin Rae as well as West Bromwich Graham Dorrans.

These two players will compensate the absence of Callum Davidson and James McFadden who will miss the

Holland game through injury and suspension respectively. One other player who is expected to feature in this clash despite concerns of an ankle injury is Scott

Brown. Scotland’s Butcher declared: "Scott Brown is confident of playing but I think he would be confident even if he had a broken leg. He is confident and, if he's confident, that augurs well. That's a real boost for everybody.''
