Real Madrid vs Deportivo La Coruña Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Aug 25th 2009
August 29 will officially mark the start of a new era at the Santiago Bernabeu when Real Madrid kick off their new La Liga campaign with a match against Deportivo La Coruna.

Real Madrid's Pepe, Higuain, Sergio Ramos and co celebrate their win against DeportivoThroughout last season, Los Blancos had to endure hard and humiliating moments in the shadow of Barcelona. Their dream of retaining their league title especially sank after they were thrashed 6-2 in the second leg of the El Clasico.

This result did nothing but emphasized Real Madrid’s miserable state. The Spanish giants understood that it was time for the club to switch tracks and restore its pride.

The departure of Ramon Calderon gave way to the famous Florentino Perez who quickly executed his plans.

The former Real Madrid president utilized this summer’s transfer market to reshape the importance of Los Blancos as a great club.

As a result, Perez captured some of the world finest players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa. Real Madrid’s current squad is the dream team of millions across the world. Although it is being compared to the side that comprised the likes of Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidan, Ronaldo, and Beckham, it is believed that the Galacticos era has vanished in the past.

So Saturday will see Real Madrid open their account with all their big stars in competitive football. Drama, anxiety, passion, and entertainment will surely rule in the atmosphere of Real Madrid’s first ever competitive game in this new era.

Expectations for Real Madrid

Manuel Pellegrini exploited the opportunity to know his new squad with a host of pre-season friendly games. The former Villareal boss is reportedly very satisfied with how things are moving in the club. His mission is to make the most of his squad which is made of superstar players. How easy will it be for Pellegrini to lead Real Madrid to victory in their first league match against Deportivo this weekend?

After winning the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu on Monday, Los Blancos’ spirits have been boosted ahead of the new season. Pellegrini possesses a vast range of talent in every position and upfront especially with players like Benzema, Higuain, Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, or even Granero.

In an interview with the media this week, the coach revealed that Real Madrid’s current number 9 will not be used in the wings only. Pellegrini somehow gave a warning to La Liga defenders as he declared that Cristiano Ronaldo will be playing a free role so as to make the most of his skills.

According to the manager, Spain’s former captain, Raul, may not be included in Real Madrid’s formal first eleven. The public is also yet to know whether the legendary number 7 will start against Deportivo or not.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s Muslim trio made of Benzema, Lassana, and Diarra, could also be left out of the clash against Deportivo La Coruna due to religious reason. Reports indicated last week that the club’s doctors will be monitoring the fitness of these players as they are presently fasting for the Ramadan.

In general, it is not clear whether Real Madrid will line up all their big stars against Deportivo this Saturday. After Monday’s 4-0 win over Rosenborg, Manuel Pellegrini praised the talent in his club by stating:

"The team has done well in pre-season and we will have many options to make a first eleven. We will look to have possession, create chances and win, that is what fans want to see.”

It is certain is that the Los Blancos will go all out for a win in order to put pressure on rivals Barcelona who play on Monday. The most important thing for Real Madrid is to start the new campaign on an excellent note as Pellegrini explained:

"Setting a long-term goal would be unwise. We need to start with three points against Deportivo and show week by week that we are prepared."
