Mallorca vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Angela Asante, May 4th 2010
Real Madrid will be in Mallorca on Wednesday evening to play their 36th La Liga game of the season. These two teams that seat in the top four have different aspirations but they’ll be fighting with the same ambition of getting all three points. For Real Madrid, the chase for the title is a mission they want to accomplish at all cost. For Real Mallorca, reaching next season’s UEFA Champions League group stages is a dream that is very much alive.

"We don't have any more easy matches… The toughest game left is the next one against Mallorca because they are fighting for a berth in next season's Champions League. We are working hard to win La Liga. We will play our heart and souls out to win all three matches. We just hope Barcelona slip up. All we can do is to wait and see what happens.” – Real Madrid’s defender Marcelo.

The Brazilian’s statement tells it all. Real Mallorca will definitely push Real Madrid all the way down to the wire on Wednesday night. They have a great advantage on rivals Sevilla with only three match-days to go in the campaign. Mallorca are placed fourth in La Liga, two points above Los Nervionenses. Out of the 59 points that they’ve captured so far, 43 were picked at home. They are actually difficult to break at the Estadi ONO where they’ve only lost twice and drawn once this season.

At this venue, they’ve conceded 11 goals to best Real Madrid’s away defensive record of 15 goals allowed in 17 games. Comparing Mallorca’s home figures to Real Madrid’s away statistics, it makes us believe that Wednesday’s game will be equally balanced and that there will be no real favorite although most people will expect Los Blancos to squeeze in for the maximum points. The fact is that Real Mallorca have scored more goals (39) at the Estadi ONI than Madrid have netted (37) away from the Bernabeu. They’ve also clinched more victories (14) on their soil than Madrid have picked (12) out of their fortress.

It will seem logic for anyone to analyze that Real Mallorca have what it takes to steal points away from the Spanish giants come Wednesday night. A major factor that will give hope for the hosts is the issue about Real Madrid’s awful defensive play. Against Osasuna, Los Blancos’ weaknesses at the back were completely exposed and Coach Manuel Pellegrini branded their 3-2 comeback victory as ‘the worst game of the year defensively’. Will defensive errors cost Real Madrid the end of their La Liga title ambitions?
