‘Real Madrid never give up’These five words were echoed by Real Madrid’s superstar winger Cristiano Ronaldo after Los Blancos’ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Almeria on Thursday. The Spanish giants were 6 points off the leaders Barcelona going into that game so a win was badly needed. Thanks to Ronaldo’s solo goal equalizer and Van der Vaart’s 68th minute match winner, Real Madrid managed to steal the maximum points away from their opponents and thus keep pace with their Catalan rivals at the top of the table.
Real Madrid refuse to concede La Liga title to Barcelona that early as there are 18 points more to scoop. They are hoping to set up a 98-point record at the end of the season which will eventually land them the trophy should Barcelona fail to best the 87-point mark they achieved last season.
Stressing Real Madrid’s need to be hopeful and looking ahead to Sunday’s crunch match against Los Che, Coach Manuel Pellegrini stated:
“We must keep on pressing Barca. We are going to fight every weekend to clinch more points and pressurize Barcelona. Next up, we’ll be playing against Valencia. It will be a very difficult match to win.”
So Real Madrid are determined to “pour their hearts out until May 16” as Jorge Valdano stated after the team’s defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico last week. Their fate currently doesn’t lie in their hands but for Dutch midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart, anything is possible. He told the press on Thursday:
“We are happy because the team has been great. We are very confident. There are six games to go after all and we have opportunities. Yes, we think it is possible to win La Liga.”
According to Coach Manuel Pellegrini, his players have psychologically recovered from their enormously disappointing loss to Barcelona which ended their perfect run at the Santiago Bernabeu in the league this season. Los Blancos will want to erase the anguishing atmosphere that they had to bear when they last played at home. It will certainly not come easy for Real Madrid to accomplish their wish this weekend but if they are indeed set not to give up in their chase for the La Liga title, then the public can expect a hot contest between both sides.
The match might be completely different from the 3-0 loss to Valencia that Real Madrid suffered on Match-day 35 last year after losing hope following their 6-2 defeat to Barcelona which had occurred a week before. All Real Madrid are looking for is another win as they aim to chase the Blaugrana all the way down the tunnel.
Valencia eying a Real Madrid victory to end their bitter away recordValencia beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Thursday to grab their 17th victory in the Spanish Primera Liga this season. Los Che have a 7-point cushion over 4th placed Real Mallorca and they look pretty much guaranteed of clinching the third and final automatic Champions League spot. But the club is aware of a prospective upset, so Coach Unai Emery prefers to avoid complacency and concentrate on winning every single match that is left in the campaign.
Valencia are very weak away from home and statistics simply prove it. They’ve not won an away game after defeating Xerez 3-1 on January 10. Since then, Los Che have played 7 matches out of the Mestalla stadium – 5 of which have ended in defeats. Besides managing only two points from a possible 21 on away grounds, Valencia have conceded up to 16 goals in those 7 games and scored only 5. Highlighting his team’s horrible away record in the year 2010, Coach Unai Emery stated:
“We are in good shape. But away from home, it’s the opposite. We have a 7-point cushion at the moment, but in two games we can lose it. Now we have to think about Sunday’s encounter. I hate to admit that there are two Valencias. One of them is the team that loses away from home and that’s something we must work on.
“On Sunday [against Real Madrid], there will be three points at stake. The team has to improve away from home. We have already lost too many away games already,” the boss concluded.
Getting all three points at the Santiago Bernabeu – where Real Madrid have lost only once this season – will be quite a way for Valencia to end their terrible away record since January. Ironically, Los Che have also lost only once at home this season and that was back in December 2009 when Garay’s injury time goal for Real Madrid saw them lose a five-goal thriller 3-2 in the end.
The former Valencia defender will not take part in Sunday’s crucial clash in Madrid. Raul Albiol was shown his fifth yellow card in La Liga this season during his side’s clash against Almeria in midweek. As his replacement, Ezequiel Garay (who got Real Madrid’s winning goal in the first leg at the Mestalla) should be given a start by Manuel Pellegrini as expected. Garay missed Thursday’s encounter against Almeria so he should be fresh for this weekend’s tough battle.
