This weekend’s clash away to the Verdiblancos will reveal a lot ahead of El Clasico and Real Madrid will hope that Sunday’s host won’t cause them troubles.
It will effectively be a huge upset should Racing Santander end Real Madrid’s perfect run in La Liga since January 24th, 2010.
Ironically, they weren’t far away to holding Los Blancos to a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first part of the season.
They lost only 1-0, but does it mean that they can stun their opponents this weekend?
Stastically, Racing Santander’s run has been awful. Their 3-1 victory away to Osasuna marked their only win since late January.
In this terrible run, Racing lost 3-0 at home to Malaga and 4-0 against an unconvincing Barcelona side. However, they also managed to pick up points with draws against Valencia, Getafe, Atletico Madrid, and Mallorca.
Coach Miguel Angel Portugal will be pondering how to stop an in-form Real Madrid at El Sardinero.
Last week though, the Verdiblancos finished on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller away to Athletic Bilbao.
Fortunate as they were to score net 3 times, they miserably conceded 4 goals and finished the night with no point in their bag.
Certainly, Racing will have to reorganize their defense who has ironically conceded fewer goals that Real Madrid in March.
Racing Santander allowed 5 goals into their net whereas Real Madrid conceded as much as 8 goals.
Either way, having picked up only 8 points from a possible 30 in their last ten La Liga matches, the Verdiblancos are yet to emulate the Spanish giants’ form of 11 consecutive victories.
But the 90 minutes on Sunday might not be about past results, so Racing Santander will be hopeful of creating something strange.
Racing Santander could pose a big threat to Real Madrid’s title aspirations and Brazilian defender Marcelo affirmed it
Parts of his statements on Real Madrid’s official website read:
“We need to take each match as it comes. We’re not thinking about Barcelona right now. We will only focus on them next week.
“We need to focus on Racing because they can really put us in a bind if we have our heads somewhere else.”
Real Madrid are experiencing an injury crisis without the likes of Kaka, Raul Albiol, Karim Benzema, Garay, and Guti who have been added on the list along with the injured Drenthe.
Hoping those absences don’t affect them negatively, the Spanish giants will hope that the other men on the pitch accomplish the club’s mission of keeping the lead in La Liga standings ahead of El Clasico.
Real Madrid are currently on 74 points, with ‘9 finals’ separating them from clinching the Spanish Primera Liga trophy.
