Real Madrid vs Sporting Gijón Match Preview

Angela Asante, Mar 19th 2010
Real Madrid will pursue their league campaign with a home match against Sporting Gijon on March 20. The match is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT.

Eight consecutive wins have put the Spanish giants on top of La Liga table; they edge Barcelona on goal difference.

This winning run is Real Madrid’s longest this season and they could stretch it again by defeating Sporting Gijon.

Gijon seat in the second half of La Liga table and in 12th precisely.

They’ve picked up as much as 10 defeats in the league but Real Madrid will certainly not consider this factor as a reason to be over confident and complacent ahead of the match.

Los Blancos will remember how much they struggled at the Estadio Municipal El Molinon earlier in the first part of La Liga campaign. They were held to a goalless draw and thus dropped two precious points in the title race.

Things are hitting up fast now as La Liga is drawing to a close and as the competition has become Real Madrid’s sole possibility to clinch a trophy this year.

The Spanish giants are unstoppable at the Santiago Bernabeu and their perfect record of 13 home wins in 13 home games since the start of campaign simply proves this fact.

This strength on home soil has helped the Spanish giants a lot to reach the top of La Liga standings.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men know how much of a threat Barcelona are to their title aspirations.

It will be a big mistake for Real Madrid to underperform this weekend like they did in that 0-0 draw against Sporting Gijon back in October.

Real Madrid players to watchCristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain

Cristiano Ronaldo was not part of the Madrid side that drew away to Gijon last year as he was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Spotlights will be on him to deliver for Los Blancos once again. His form for the Spanish giants has been remarkable.

Ronaldo has scored 8 goals in his last 6 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid and his goal hot form is poised to continue and to lead Los Blancos to yet another victory this Saturday.

Another player under the spotlight will be Gonzalo Higuain, Real Madrid’s top scorer domestically. After securing a hat-trick against Valladolid last weekend, it will be interesting to see what the Argentine striker will have to offer to the home crowd.
