Barcelona vs Málaga Match Preview

Isaac Asante, Feb 27th 2010
The third fixture in La Liga this weekend will see FC Barcelona coming up against Malaga at the Estadio Camp Nou. Barcelona enter this game with an unsettling result in the Champions League during midweek, whereas Malaga were 2-1 winners over Espanyol last Sunday.

Barcelona – Bouncing back…

Barcelona's Zlatan Ibrahimovic feeling disappointed after a poor performance against Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions LeagueI. Days after their Champions League dissatisfaction

In the face of a well-constructed Barcelona side, the Champions League title holders were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw away to Stuttgart. Their performance was visibly unconvincing, with Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and substitute Thierry Henry all being fruitless in their respective positions.

Lack of connection between the midfield players and the attackers in some ways punished the Blaugrana – who admitted afterward that their work was substandard.

The problem which seems to dwell in the Barcelona camp at the moment is that the Spanish League leaders have not been at their full best since the past two weeks now, and such a hitch is being a focus for what could be the collapse of the club which has been so highly estimated in the last two years.

Finding back their devastating shape is presently very essential, as previous days have only jeopardized their opportunities of winning the La Liga title, as well as their chances of progressing in the Champions League’s next stage.

II. Bonuses ahead of their game against Malaga

Barcelona's Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Lionel Messi in traningOver the last few days, Barcelona have been hit by several injuries and a few red cards – forcing the retrieval of key players including Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique, Maxwell, Xavi Hernandez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and others; but at least, Barca have a big part of their strength back with the return of all the players previously mentioned.

This adds to the list of instrumental intact players consisting of Lionel Messi, Pedro Rodriguez, Thierry Henry, Andres Iniesta, Dmytro Chygrynskiy, Carlos Puyol, and Victory Valdes.

Malaga – A side to handle with expertise

Malaga appear as a challenging side in La Liga for sure. Despite having won none of their league games against Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, and Sevilla this season, the growing club has sucked out a lot of energy out of their strong opponents.

I. In their last 5 games…

Malaga players celebrating after scoring a goal in La LigaSince their attention-grabbing defeat to Real Madrid on the 24th of January, Malaga have not endured any loss.

They beat struggling side Atletico Madrid 2-0 on January 31, but could only manage to get a hold of a draw against Deportivo La Coruna. Racing Santander seemed like the weakest side Malaga had met this year, crushing the Racinguistas 3-0 away from home.

Last Sunday, Espanyol looked set to dominate the Boquerones in their own home, but Malaga fought back properly to win the match 2-1.

If Malaga lose this Saturday, then Barcelona would only be the third team to silence them in 12 encounters this year.

II. Malaga and Controversy

Last season, Barcelona complained to the Spanish FA for having their ex-African striker Samuel Eto’o racially abused by Malaga fans when both sides faced each other at the Estadio La Rosaleda. In that same match, the Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was also accused of emitting saliva on one of his opposing players.

For that particular incident, no action was taking against Messi – as the Malaga President intervened to clear the young Argentine from any wrong deed.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment when he hit Malaga's Mtiliga in the noseThis season, the media having stopped following the Malaga club either, and this is all attributable to the occurrence which took place between Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and Malaga’s Mtiliga.

Video highlights showed the Portuguese winger breaking the nose of his marker Mtiliga with his arm, while trying to make his way through the midfield with the ball.

With all this in record, it is certain that the Malaga football club has had some strange issues in recent times, but both their supporters and Barcelona fans will be praying to enjoy a decent game this weekend at the Camp Nou.
