Barcelona vs Racing Santander Match Preview

Isaac Asante, Feb 19th 2010
FC Barcelona and Racing Santander will meet on Saturday evening in La Liga at the Estadio Camp Nou. Barcelona were stunned by a 2-1 defeat away to Atletico Madrid as a result of an incomplete squad, but this week, they must be in control so as to maintain their lead at the top of the Spanish Primera Liga table.

Barcelona – Recovery and preparation

Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Racing SantanderBarcelona suffered their first league defeat at the Estadio Vicente Calderon last weekend; thus, their 5-point lead at the top ahead of rivals Real Madrid was reduced to only 2 points. A win at home against Racing Santander might not restore or widen the gap between them and Los Blancos, but at least, it will prevent Real from getting any closer to them.

This game will be of high importance for the Barca players – who will be travelling to Stuttgart in mid-week to face the German giants in the UEFA Champions League. The outcome of this league encounter against Santander will definitely have an impact on the Blaugrana next Tuesday, as the Catalans look to avoid any injuries, or suspensions.

Barcelona won 4-1 over Racing Santander at the beginning of this season away to the Estadio El Sardinero, with goals coming from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, and Gerard Pique.

Ibrahimovic and Messi are expected to make the starting line-up of Pep Guardiola ahead of Barcelona’s home match this weekend, but as for Gerard Pique, one could look forward to seeing him sidelined following the red card he received about two weeks ago in his home clash against Getafe.

Other players such as Xavi Hernandez, Yaya Toure, Dani Alves, and Eric Abidal are all unlikely to feature for the league leaders against Santander, due to injuries.

The Barcelona players on the pitch will then have to carry a heavy load without the help of some regular starters; but even though the Blaugrana’s front can feel confident of living up to expectations, the defense seems to be extremely unstable.

Racing Santander – Dealing with the high pressure

Entering this game, Racing Santander are undoubtedly looking as the underdogs. Surprising the hosts isn’t very predictable on the part of Santander who have been unconvincing in recent weeks.

Racing haven’t received much praises from their fans lately, as mistakes appear to tarnish their style of play in different ways. Their aces Gonzalo Colsa, Pedro Munitis and Tchite all missed their opportunities of facing Barcelona subsequent to bad attitudes last week, through which they got yellow cards – preventing them from being in action at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

Racing Santander lie in 13th position in the Spanish La Liga standings, and shocking Barcelona will be a must for them and their fans, despite everything.
