Real Madrid vs Villarreal Match Preview

Angela Asante, Feb 21st 2010
Real Madrid’s defeat in midweek against Lyon in the Champions League was followed by criticism and pressure from the fans and the media.

Real Madrid's Fernando Gago being challenged during his side's match at El Madrigal against Villarreal in La Liga. But with La Liga resuming this weekend, the Spanish giants will prefer to forget about the things that happened in Europe and rather focus on their domestic clash against Villarreal.

Real Madrid – Profit or pretend

Being only two points off Barcelona at a moment where the Catalans are injury-hit, Real Madrid have two options: to profit of the situation, or to become title pretenders.

Profit

Keeping the momentum by extending their outstanding home run record is certainly the key for Los Blancos to keep up the pressure against Barcelona at the top of La Liga standings.

Real Madrid could either clinch the first place or be joint leaders with the Blaugrana if they beat Villarreal on Sunday and if Barca slip at home to Racing Santander a day earlier.

Records always end but Real Madrid will pray that their 12 consecutive home wins run doesn’t terminates itself on match-day 23.

Los Blancos will be encouraged by their fans to pursue positively at the Santiago Bernabeu and eventually make the double over the Yellow Submarines of Villarreal.

Pretend

Should Barcelona clinch maximum points against Racing Santander on Saturday evening, the need for Real Madrid to get a victory on Sunday will be greater.

Match-day 22 saw the Spanish giants enjoy a perfect weekend; they triumphed 3-0 over Xerez to close the gap to only two points against the Catalans who subsequently lost away to Atletico Madrid.

Why would Real Madrid have to allow anxiety to rule their camp again?

The opportunities are wide opened now for Los Blancos to march forward and ultimately reclaim La Liga title from Barcelona.

However, a negative result this weekend will only let Real Madrid look like title pretenders.
The worst thing perhaps, is that such a thing might have a strong effect on the Spanish giants’ upcoming games and atmosphere at the club.

A ‘breaking news’ sack for under fire manager Manuel Pellegrini?

Villarreal – Get up or slip down furtherVillarreal players celebrate altogether

This 2009/2010 La Liga season hasn’t been the best for Villarreal.

Whether the switch of Manuel Pellegrini from El Madrigal to the Santiago Bernabeu is a major reason for the club’s present worries or not, the reality remains that Villarreal must back up quickly if they want to play in Europe next season.

The Yellow Submarines are 10th in the table standings with 29 points, having picked more defeats (9) than victories (8) in 22 games.

Villarreal carry an awful record behind them against Real Madrid. They’ve never won at the Santiago Bernabeu against Los Blancos and seven of their last ten meetings against the Spanish giants have ended up in defeat.

Sunday’s hosts will be dreaming of overturning this miserable fate.

But after their eventful Europa League game in midweek against Wolfsburg where they drew 2-2 at home and were reduced to ten men, do Villarreal possess the perfect moral to stun Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu?

The truth is that if they can’t defeat Los Blancos, they might even be overtaken by 11th placed Atletico Madrid in La Liga standings.

Real Madrid vs Villarreal – quick team news info

For Los Blancos, it has been reported that veteran midfielder Guti could be out whereas Rafael Van der Vaart is expected to return to action after recovering from injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates against Villarreal after opening the score sheet inside the first three minutes of the game. Meanwhile, Villarreal will have to do without the likes of Diego Godin who sustained a red card last week.

Watch out for Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo was the man of the match in the first leg of this encounter.

The former Manchester United forward raced down the left flank and eventually completed his solo effort with a well taken goal that downed Villarreal as early as inside the first three minutes. Real Madrid eventually won that match 2-0.

The Yellow Submarines will surely need to be careful with Ronaldo, who has recently been branded by Castrol Performance Analysis as more performing in some areas than a cheetah, an Olympic sprinter, and Apollo 11’s rocket.La Liga (LFP) logo
