Deportivo Xerez vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Angela Asante, Feb 11th 2010
As La Liga returns in Spain after some Copa del Rey action in midweek, three matches will take place on Saturday. Among those, Real Madrid will clash up against Xerez at the Estadio Municipal de Chapin.

Real Madrid's Ricardo Kaka is challenged by a Xerez player during the Real Madrid vs Xerez game which ended 5-0 in favor of Los Blancos. Both teams will try to be inspired by their different aspirations. For Xerez, it will be time to take hold of their home advantage and find the perfect result that will help them come out from the relegation zone.

For Real Madrid, this weekend could represent something very positive from a Los Blancos point of view. It will begin by avoiding a shock against Xerez and thus defeating them.

Rock bottomed Xerez want to upset the Spanish giants

Seating 20th in La Liga’s table standings, six points behind 19th placed Tenerife, with a negative goal difference of 26 goals, and with a miserable memory of their 5-0 defeat against Madrid at the Bernabeu, Xerez look helpless and favorites to be relegated at the end of the season.

However, this team dares to dream big; Xerez are aiming to inflict anguish on Real Madrid and eventually clinch three vital points.

Goalkeeper Renan openly avowed his club’s desire ahead of this Saturday’s La Liga fixture. He made his point on Xerez’s official club website:

“We will be playing at home. For this reason, we’ll have to go for it all. The objective will be to go into the game with the idea of surprising them [Real Madrid] and win.”

“It is a very important game for us. We respect our opponents but we also have to fight for the three points.”

Intimidation towards Real Madrid’s superstars may not be the Azulinos’ problem, but the coach’s tactical ideas will certainly be a key factor in Xerez's fate this Saturday.

While many believe that being negative and playing anti-football is the best manner for lower teams to distract giants, Xerez’s Brazilian goalkeeper Renan backed his team mate to be very offensive.

Talking about the play, the shot stopper explained:

“We’ll have to defend well and play football, and then get the ball forward.

“We need to take risks if we want to win. We’ll be more likely to get a positive result if we get closer to their goal.”

Snatching three points against Real Madrid on Saturday will still not be enough for Xerez to move above the 20th position in La Liga.

But the fact of trampling down the 31-time La Liga champions will certainly power them with a great boost and some good tonic until the end of the Spanish Primera Division campaign.

Real Madrid – the perfect weekend?Real Madrid coach, Manuel Pellegrini, watches his team from the touch line. Xerez's coach is in the background, looking embarrassed.

With Barcelona not playing until Sunday night, Real Madrid will stand the opportunity of cutting the five-point gap that separates them from the Catalans at the top of the table to only two points.

Ahead of match-day 22, Los Blancos have tipped Atletico Madrid as capable of doing them a favor by defeating Barcelona.

However, a positive result at the Vicente Calderon from a Real Madrid point of view will be maximally useful only if the Spanish giants accomplish their tricky mission away to Xerez.

Room for complacency will not be allowed; Manuel Pellegrini will certainly not need to remind his players of the 4-0 defeat which Real Madrid suffered against minnows Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey earlier this season.

Real Madrid team news and facts

An immense boost for Los Blancos: Cristiano Ronaldo will finally be back on the field of play after serving the two-match ban that was given to him following the red card which he sustained for breaking the nose of Malaga’s Mtiliga with his elbow.

Cristiano Ronaldo is poised to play alongside Gonzalo Higuain in attack as Karim Benzema has been left out injured while Captain Raul’s future at Real Madrid has been rumored as uncertain due to his bench role.

In defense, there might be an interesting line up as left-back Marcelo is expected to miss the match through injury. Drenthe could play as a starter; meanwhile, Sergio Ramos, Lassana Diarra, and Alvaro Arbeloa could play in different areas.

Thursday also saw Van der Vaart turning 27 and celebrating his birthday with a good result away to Xerez on Saturday was part of his wishes.

The Dutch man was quoted as saying to the media:

"Tomorrow I will turn 27. How time flies! It would be a very nice birthday gift to play a lot of minutes against Xerez and score a goal. My family lives very near and they will all attend the match."

Could match-day 22 in La Liga present a perfect weekend for Real Madrid?
