Real Madrid vs Espanyol Match Preview

Angela Asante, Feb 6th 2010
In another interesting clash this weekend, Los Blancos of Real Madrid will play host to Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid players celebrate at the Santiago BernabeuReal Madrid – another three points?

Are the Spanish giants going to pick up another three points at home?

Well, a Madrid fan will scream, ‘they better!’

Like it happened last Sunday, Real Madrid might enter this weekend’s fixture eight points behind Barcelona.

The gap between the two teams is of five points currently, but the Catalans could widen it even more if they beat Getafe earlier.

Prospect: not defeating Espanyol might let Los Blancos concede the end of their La Liga title hunt.

Fact: not defeating Espanyol will let Los Blancos end their 100% record at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be playing for the second time in a row as he has to serve the final part of his two-match ban suspension.

However, the voices of Real Madrid doubters are not as loud as they were before the Spanish giants’ match away to Deportivo.

Since Manuel Pellegrini’s men surmounted the challenge of breaking the Riazor curse without the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, a big majority of Real Madrid supporters have found more confidence in their team; they believe that Los Blancos can survive again without the Portuguese playmaker come Saturday night.

In the first leg of this fixture, Real Madrid played for more than an hour without Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.

They were leading 2-0 until substitute CR9 found the net deep in injury time to round up Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory away to Espanyol.

But on Saturday, will the visitors allow themselves to be rattled by the Spanish giants? Can Espanyol mark Real Madrid’s 11th home game in La Liga this season by inflicting defeat on the hosts?

Espanyol – more troubles and worries?Espanyol players arguing before the referee

Perhaps, Espanyol must not see Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence as a point of weakness for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid’s 3-1 win against Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor last Sunday was certainly no fluke.

As for Espanyol themselves, they surely have to worry about their away form this season. Their last win away from the Cornella-El Prat stadium came back in September 2009 against Deportivo ironically.

Since then, it has mostly been all about misery and disappointment for Espanyol in away games.

A 4-0 trashing on Atletico Madrid’s turf, a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Camp Nou, and the recent 2-0 loss away to Osasuna are some few results which describe Espanyol’s poor run of seven successive away matches without a win.

Another alarming statistic reveals that the Periquitos share the worst ‘away goals scored’ record with 20th side Xerez.

Certainly, if they can’t trouble Iker Casillas in post, then more worries will come upon this entire Catalan side on Saturday night in Madrid.

Espanyol are 14th in La Liga’s standings and they can’t afford to lose anymore points. Otherwise, their European dream will definitely come to an end and surviving the relegation zone will become their ultimate battle.
