Atlético Madrid vs Real Madrid Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Nov 3rd 2009
There will be another derby in the Spanish capital on Saturday in the Spanish Primera Liga as second-placed Real Madrid travel to local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid players run onto the sidelines in celebration at the Vicente Calderon stadiumLSTV’s writer, Angela Asante, takes her time to preview this big clash by providing necessary facts and analyzing a few points…

Atletico Madrid facts

Atletico Madrid are third from bottom above Malaga and Xerez and they are on 7 points.

They are unbeaten at home, but they’ve also won only once this season. That was against Real Zaragoza back in October at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

Atletico Madrid have let 19 goals enter into the back of their net in only 9 games which explains that they concede a bit more than 2 goals per match on average.

In contrast, they’ve scored only 10 goals and not more than two goals came in a single game.
Almost half of Atletico Madrid’s matches in La Liga have ended in disappointing draws.

On the other side, they’ve succumbed to heavy defeats (three-goal margin) against Malaga, Barcelona, and Osasuna.

Recently, their loss away to Atletico Bilbao only worsened their run in the campaign.
It was certainly not the best debut for new coach Quique Flores Sanchez. However, the upcoming game against Real Madrid could turn things around.

Hosting illustrious millionaires is never easy, but defeating them brings immense pride. This is just what Atletico Madrid will seek on Saturday to shake off the bad sent that is tarnishing their miserable campaign so far.

23 goals scored, and only 6 goals conceded. Los Blancos’ statistics are good enough but not the best in a sense.

Real Madrid’s scoring instinct is not to come under criticism, but much must be said against their defensive form.

They have been inconsistent at the back:

Real Madrid clinched six clean sheets in nine games but statistics also show that they conceded not more or less than two goals each time they failed to keep their lines clean.

Ironically, Atletico Madrid haven’t managed to score more than two goals in any of their games so far this season in the Spanish Primera La Liga.

Players to be highlighted

Atletico Madrid’s Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero could capture the spotlight if their side manages to dominate against Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Whether they’ll leave up to expectations or not, this striking duo is always poised to get off the mark against big teams.

For Real Madrid, there’ll be no Raul Albiol in defense as the defender received a straight red card against Getafe last weekend.

The pressure will be on goalkeeper Iker Casillas to save Real Madrid from danger at the back.

General opinions and predictions

Real Madrid have negatively proven that they can lose against any team. Their 4-0 defeat against third tier side Alcorcon in the Spanish Copa del Rey explained that any upset is possible in football and that Real Madrid should draw a line between overconfidence/complacency, and psychological/physical potential and determination.Real Madrid's former defender, Gabriel Heinze, tackles Atletico Madrid's star striker Sergio Aguero

Atletico Madrid could pick up their second victory in La Liga this season and should they do so, then my predictions are that they’ll win 1-0 or score three goals for the first time in the campaign.

On the other hand, Real Madrid could pick up all three points after a hard-fought 2-1 battle.

Should they find their rhythm at the Vicente Calderon, then there could be a goal feast for Los Blancos as Atletico Madrid’s defense has proven to be one of the most vulnerable among the rest of the teams in the Spanish Primer Liga.

Statistical facts for both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid

Real Madrid will enter Saturday’s match as second in the table. They’ll be four points off the top of the table if the leaders Barcelona beat Real Mallorca at the Camp Nou earlier.

In that case, a victory will let things remain as they were when the Spanish Primera La Liga took a pause on Sunday night.

If Barcelona get anything else than a victory in their game, then Real Madrid – who will kick off a few minutes after the end of the Catalans’ match – will have the chance of overtaking the lead at the top of the table’s standings.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will drop a place down should they lose against Real Madrid and should Malaga beat Tenerife four hours before the Madrid local derby.
