Sporting Gijón vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Angela Asante, Oct 22nd 2009
The fact that Sporting Gijon are a former second division side doesn’t put less importance on the fixture that will come up this weekend.

Sporting Gijon's players celebrate their victory over Mallorca in La LigaMidweek losers Real Madrid travel to Sporting Gijon later on as La Liga resumes on Saturday.

Los Blancos are looking forward to recovering from their patchy performances which saw them lose 3-2 to AC Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League on Wednesday…

Sporting Gijon Analysis

Bad results against Barcelona (on match-day 1) and Osasuna (late in September) thought to have discouraged Gijon.

In reality, it perhaps gave them good lessons and experiences to rely on.

Holding Valencia 2-2 at the Mestalla stadium and beating Mallorca 4-1 on home soil are two incredible things – especially for a club with the pedigree of Sporting Gijon.

On Saturday, there’ll be nothing to laugh about when they host the giants, Real Madrid.

Sporting Gijon, who really cannot compete financially with Los Blancos, do not have much to lose against Pellegrini’s side who is filled with star names.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the hosts will go all out for a victory against the wounded giants of the Spanish capital.

Sporting Gijon are surprisingly in the top half of the table, just one point behind Valencia who are sixth. They’ll be keen to keep their amazing run by upsetting Florentino Perez’s millionaires, Los Blancos.

Meanwhile, the Whites will not attempt to underestimate their adversaries on Saturday.

Real Madrid have certainly taken notes from Sporting Gijon’s game against Barcelona on the first day of the campaign.

Being clinical from set pieces will definitely help Real Madrid to clinch a goal feast. In the meantime, Los Blancos’ back line needs to concentrate and be tight.

It is expected that Pellegrini’s team will go all out to create chances and attack.

Analytically, Real Madrid should find several ways through on goal since their forwards are superior to Sporting Gijon’s defenders on paper.

However, football is not played on paper only and the Chilean coach is fully aware of that.

With the defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League still ringing in the back of the players’ mind, the desire to compensate the fans with fluency, goals, and a long run of victories has certainly reached its height.

Real Madrid cannot afford to lose anymore points if they intend to lift the Spanish Primera Liga title for another time in their history of football.

Last week, Los Blancos closed the gap to only one points on their rivals, Barcelona. In order not to throw away the opportunities that the league table presents at the top, Real Madrid must beat Gijon away from home this weekend.

The Spanish Giants will have the chance to go back on top of the standings with a victory over Sporting Gijon for at least 24 hours as Barcelona play Real Zaragoza on Sunday only.
