Everton vs Portsmouth Match Preview
Everton needed a win against Stoke City last weekend to have any hope of qualifying for a European berth next season. Their failure to score against the Potters at Britannia Stadium confines them to domestic activity next season.
Everton’s Phil Jagielka did manage to get the ball in the Stoke net in the 72nd minute from a header off a corner kick. But the Toffees celebrations were cut short when the referee called it back for offside.
Now in eighth going into the last game of the season, the Toffees trail their Merseyside neighbors Liverpool by four points and thus have lost the opportunity put pressure on the Reds in the final weekend of the season.
Everton will have little to focus on but next season now. Win, lose or draw against Portsmouth this weekend they’ll remain in eighth place.
Portsmouth may have a different outlook. Granted, they’re officially relegated to the League Championship. Yet despite relegation and a host of financial problems throughout the season Portsmouth showed spirit and endeavor once again last weekend.
Their 3-1 victory over Wolves at Fratton Park was well-deserved. Watching Pompey it’s hard sometimes to recall that they are a relegated club, and one can’t help but sometimes think this team belongs in the Premier League.
Still, Pompey has the FA Cup Final to look forward to later this month and it would be an ironic and in some ways fitting end of season hurrah were they to walk off with the oldest trophy in football.
Avram Grant made a show of gratitude to the Pompey fans following the final whistle last weekend. He has done well under the circumstances this season and clearly wanted to show the fans his appreciation for their support.
Portsmouth will be looking to prove again this weekend that the faith their fans have continued to show in their team is not misplaced.
Everton vs Portsmouth Match Report
Everton dominated play against a relegated Portsmouth side on Sunday but they only just managed to get the three points.
Portsmouth manager Avram Grant’s side showed pluck from time-to-time and were it not for what certainly seemed a very iffy offside call after Anthony Vanden Borre put the ball in the back of the Everton net, Pompey might have had a share of the points.
Iffy? Nay! Let’s put it more bluntly. It was a bad call and it robbed Pompey of a share of the spoils. Indeed, watching the replays it’s impossible to know what the linesman saw that prompted him to raise his flag.
Still, most of the chances fell to the Toffees, with Saha and Arteta both squandering opportunities.
Nevertheless, Portsmouth had another fine scoring opportunity when Frederic Piquionne ran onto a through ball and spectacularly deceived both Phil Jagielka and keeper Tim Howard. Howard recovered, though, and blocked Piquionne’s shot equally spectacularly.
The Toffees left it late before scoring their winner. It was worth the wait. Four minutes into second half stoppage time Diniyar Bilyaletdinov took a pass just outside the arc from Johnny Heitinga and swung a left footer that hooked into the upper corner of the goal past a diving Jamie Ashdown.
Everton finish their campaign in eighth, just two points behind their Merseyside rivals Liverpool. For manager David Moyes this must be a disappointment, given the promise his team showed last season. Portsmouth will play next season in the 2nd tier of English football, the League Championship. But this season isn’t quite finished for them yet. They play Chelsea in the FA Cup Final next week.
