Portsmouth vs Blackburn Rovers Match Preview
Portsmouth are bound for the Championship division next season thanks in large part to their financial difficulties. Mired in last place most of the season anyway, Pompey were assessed a nine point deduction for going into financial administration and this sealed their Premier League doom.
Despite this catastrophe Portsmouth manager Avram Grant and his men have fought the good fight and throughout an abysmally bad season they have managed the occasional good result, and in fact still live and breath in the FA Cup.
Pompey will meet Tottenham in the FA Cup Semi-Final on April 11 and they’ll be hoping they can get a better result than they did in the league against Spurs last weekend. Spurs beat Pompey 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
That game brought bad news on the injury front for Avram Grant, too. Defender Hermann Hreidarsson suffered a ruptured Achilles and striker Danny Webber sustained a knee injury in the Tottenham match. Both men are done for the season.
Last time out Blackburn Rovers beat Portsmouth 3-1 at the Reebock Stadium, and in recent weeks Blackburn have shown some pretty good form.
They managed a 1-1 draw with Chelsea two weeks ago. That was followed quickly with victories over Birmingham City and then Burnley.
Currently smack dab in the middle of the table in 10th place there is neither fear of relegation nor aspirations of glory in the Bolton squad.
Nevertheless, these are sportsmen and they will want to win for pride. Injuries, however, have come into play recently, in particular the calf injury sustained by goalkeeper Paul Robinson against Tottenham two weeks ago.
Robinson probably won’t be back in action until mid-to-late April.
