Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton Match Preview

Wolverhampton managed a well-earned 2-2 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park at the weekend. Wolves were unfortunate not to get the win as a late goal from John Carew salvaged Villa’s day.

Despite the late let down, the draw with Villa must have buoyed the morale of manager Mick McCarthy’s men as they traveled to London for a massive relegation avoidance battle with West Ham on Tuesday.

Wolves trounced the hapless Hammers 1-3, thus padding their points total. They now sit in 15th place, a full seven points above the drop threshold.

Injuries to midfielders David Edwards and Michael Kightly will affect McCarthy’s selection, but essentially his squad is unchanged as both injured players have been out for some time.

Wolves took a one-goal lead last time out against Everton and almost held it until Bilyaletdinov equalized with his first goal for the club. Given the decent run of form they have had of late they will be cautiously optimistic about their ability to take the game to Everton at Molineux.

Everton come into the weekend following a deserved 0-2 victory over Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday. Goals by Cahill and Arteta sealed the victory.

Late excitement erupted on the sidelines when City boss Roberto Mancini took exception to Everton boss David Moyes’ retrieving the ball when it had gone out of play. A fracas developed but was soon smothered. Both managers were “sent off.”

The Toffees are now undefeated in their last four matches, three of which they won. Sitting in eighth place, Everton are currently the meat in a Birmingham sandwich. Aston Villa lead the Toffees by three points and Birmingham City trail them by four.

Everton’s influential midfielder Marouane Fellaini is out for the season, while defender Philippe Senderos will be out through the end of March. Victor Anichebe may also be unavailable through injury.
