Burnley vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Preview
Burnley came from behind to salvage a point in their 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Turf Moor midweek. Striker David Nugent scored his second goal in as many games.
The draw lifted the Clarets one position in the table, taking them from 19th to 18th. But they still live dangerously in the relegation zone.
This weekend’s match against Wolves is a big one. The two clubs share the same number of points—24—but Wolves are clear of relegation on goal difference only.
Saturday’s match represents an opportunity for Burnley to leapfrog Wolves and climb into safety if they can get three points. But defender Steven Caldwell, Midfielder Chris McCann, and striker Steven Fletcher were all listed as injured midweek.
Wolves beat Burnley 2-0 at Molineux in December but Turf Moor this weekend won’t be so hospitable an environment, particularly since defeat could ultimately condemn the loser to relegation into the League Championship.
A narrow 0-1 loss to Manchester United last weekend suggests that Mick McCarthy’s men can play football, but finishing is a problem for them. Wolves’ striker Sam Vokes’ stoppage time miss from point blank range simultaneously condemned his team to defeat and gifted Manchester United with three points on the day.
Fourth from the bottom, Wolves simply can’t afford to miss such opportunities. Wolves come into the weekend with injuries to midfielders David Edwards and Michael Kightly.
