Manchester United vs Everton Match Preview

Angela Asante, Nov 19th 2009
Business comes back this weekend in the English Premier League with all of the big four in action on Saturday.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney in action against Everton at Old TraffordIn the late kick off, Manchester United welcome Merseyside’s blue Toffees Everton at Old Trafford.

Manchester United – Time to get back up

The Red Devils put their league campaign on hold on a controversial and bad note. In their last Premiership match, Manchester United picked up zero points as they left Stamford Bridge dejected and emptied by John Terry’s lone goal for Chelsea.

This 1-0 defeat to the Blues of London moved Manchester United a place down in the English Premier League table.

The Red Devils are now five points off the leaders Chelsea. They are also level on points with Arsenal but they are third behind them on goal difference. Besides, the Gunners have one game in hand.

Some weeks ago, the English Premier League defending champions looked pretty strong at the top of the standings whereas Chelsea were aiming to recover completely from their two defeats against Wigan and Aston Villa respectively.

Things seem different presently and Manchester United’s condition explains that the Red Devils cannot afford to drop points against Everton on Saturday if they want to keep the hit in the title race.

Red Devil defender Nemanja Vidic - who will probably not feature on Saturday - stated this week:

“These are big games, especially as Chelsea are five points ahead [at the top]. The next two to three games will be very important..."

Meanwhile, South Korea’s playmaker Ji Sung Park added to Vidic’s comments concerning the “winning” issue at Manchester United.

The Asian declared:

“It is still a long season. Five points is a big gap but we can get over that, with many games left.

“We can still win the title. We know how to deal with these games. I do not think we have a problem.”

Manchester United will have to prove that they have not lost the plot after losing against two of three Big Four. On Saturday, winning will be their only target.

Everton – Coming out from the nightmare?Everton's Louis Saha marching forward during training before a match

It’s been freak, surprising, or perhaps laughable from an anti-Everton fan point of view.

David Moyes’ Toffees are enduring a nightmare in the English Premier League this season with a string of alarming or poor results, but will the 2-1 victory (which they got against West Ham United before the international break) give them the right platform to build on?

On twelfth place, Everton look far from achieving the heights that they reached a couple of years ago when they qualified for Europe.

However, the English Premier League campaign is not even at its half-way point so the Toffees could make the most of each game to try and turn their season around.

On Saturday evening, they’ll face a very difficult task away to Alex Ferguson’s hungry Manchester United.

Maybe, dreaming of a victory at Old Trafford against the defending champions will seem too much of an illusion for certain Everton fans.

However, they could still enter Saturday’s match with the faith of obtaining at least a draw – just like they did during ninety minutes of football against the Red Devils in the FA Cup semifinal back last season.
