Liverpool will enter the match with their heads held high following their magnificent 6-1 triumph over Hull City last Saturday.
On the contrary, the hosts Chelsea will need to gather confidence and concentration in order to brush away the shocking 3-1 defeat that they suffered against Wigan at the DW Stadium last week.
The Blues were on a high during six consecutive games in the English Premier League. Their 100% record saw them triumph over Hull City, Sunderland, Fulham, Burnley, Stoke City, and Tottenham Hotspurs respectively.
Astonishingly, Chelsea went down 3-1 against the Latics in match-day seven of the campaign. The Blues consequently slipped onto second in the standings behind the new leaders Manchester United.
On Sunday, they’ll host their rivals Liverpool in a crucial encounter for both sides. The test will definitely be a hard one for Carlo Ancelotti’s men who lost their identity against Wigan Athletic last weekend.
There were virtually no positives to take away from that disappointing encounter in terms of play. However, Carlo Ancelotti who admitted his side’s mediocrity also accepted the defeat as a motivation for the future.
He said to the media:
"We need to react well to this defeat and sometimes when you lose there is new motivation.
''We did not play a good game [against Wigan]. It was a bad performance. I do not know why we did not play well. But these things can happen after a lot of victories.
"We have to accept this loss and fix things for our next match.”
Didier Drogba, who was finally given the all-clear from the doctors to play against Wigan, scored the equalizer only for his side to concede two more goals and lose 3-1.
The Ivory Coast captain echoed the opinion of his boss, Carlo Ancelotti, by saying:
"This is the worst game I have played in since I have been at Chelsea. We need to think about it, correct what was wrong and try to go again."
Unfortunately for Chelsea, some players may not be fully fit to feature against Liverpool: Ashley Cole, Michael Ballack, and John Obi Mikel all suffered knocks against Wigan last week.
Another big blow for the Blues will be the absence of the first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Czech international was given a straight red car for what was described as a professional foul on Wigan Athletic’s Hugo Rodallega.
Consequently, 33-year-old Hilario is expected to feel the hole created by Cech’s absence against Liverpool.
The R
eds are only just starting to sparkle in the English Premier League this season and last weekend’s hat-trick hero Fernando Torres explained his side’s current situation:
"After starting the season with two early defeats we knew we needed to improve.
"We are now winning games at home against sides in the middle or near the bottom of the table, and it has given us more confidence.
"As a team we are now in a good moment. We must keep trying to improve.”
The on-fire striker has scored five goals in Liverpool’s last two Premiership matches and he is the top scorer in England with eight goals.
Fernando Torres proved dangerous in both of Liverpool’s games against Chelsea in the Premier League last season. Once again, the Spanish international is eying a victory in London.
Reflecting on the importance of that encounter, Torres declared:
"We have a difficult game next weekend at Chelsea and we will be on the same points as them if we win the game, so we are looking forward to it."
Liverpool was the side that broke Chelsea’s famous unbeaten record at the Bridge thanks to a lone goal scored by Xabi Alonso.
The midfielder has now departed the Merseyside Reds and many have started mourning his absence. The debate whether Liverpool miss Alonso or not is still on and Rafael Benitez would be keen to prove doubters wrong.
