Spain vs USA Match Preview

By Angela Asante, Jun 22nd 2009
Stunning USA through to the semis

Clint Dempsey celebrates USA's third goal against Egypt

They did it, only just! Whereas everyone had almost excluded them from the rest of the tournament after their 3-0 lost to Brazil in the second round, the USA rose up to stun Egypt on Sunday. Their reward is a semi-final clash against the world’s best national team, Spain.

Don’t let things happen, make them happen…

And the Yankees did just that to fulfil this philosophy of mine. Goals from Davies, Bradley, and Clint Dempsey, were exactly what the USA needed to edge past Egypt and even Italy. Bob Bradley’s men fully profited from Egypt’s injury worries during the game on goalkeeper El Hadari and the influential Fathi among others. In the end, Italy (who were beaten 3-0 on the night by Brazil) and Egypt (who were in the driving seat after defeating the Azzuri 1-0) both conceded the second place finish to the United States of America. The fate of crushing out in this manner might be very hard to swallow for Egyptian fans. As for supporters of the United States, Sunday night was a moment to remember in the country’s soccer history.

Spain Analysis: Good but not perfect

A day before, Vicente Del Bosque’s European champions became the first side to have a 100% record in this tournament. La Furia Roja’s 2-0 win over South Africa in Round 3 was “unnecessary” as they had already sealed their passage to the semifinals. But as long as it is important to keep a good form, the Spanish went on to win and set a record of 15 wins on the trot.

It seems like the Spanish national team hasn’t performed at its best in the Confederations Cup tournament so far. They kicked off their campaign with a 5-0 victory against New Zealand, but that score line didn’t fully reflected the numerous chances that the Spanish had. The score line could have been of a wider margin.

In the second match against Iraq, Spain secured all three points and ensured qualification to the semis thanks to David Villa’s second half header. But match facts also showed how often the Iraqis managed to break away in attack, while Spain lacked of efficiency in front of goal at the other end of the pitch. David Villa relieved to have scored against South Africa - Torres in the background

David Villa again powered Spain to victory against South Africa. The hosts were just about to make an excellent work against the European Champions when their goalkeeper marvelously saved David Villa’s penalty. But from there, the South Africans lost concentration and Villa quickly redeemed himself with a superb goal to break the deadlock. Spain went on to win 2-0 in the end.

In all, Spain prove that true champions know how to win even without being at their best. They always find a way out – be it through the likes of David Villa, Fernando Torres or someone else. It seems like they are simply unbeatable. Can the USA stun them as they stunned the whole world by heading out from Group B which included Italy?

USA to surprise Spain too?

Luckiness, miracle, strength…? Whatever it was that helped the USA beat the Egyptians so comprehensively, they are through to the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup, and this is a reality, not a dream.

The USA showed quite a good form against Italy in the first round. Certainly, Clark’s harsh dismissal also had to do with their inability to stand firm until the 90 minutes were over. The USA lost 3-1 in the end. However, despite losing so deservedly against Brazil in the next game, the Yankees managed to oust Italy in the end.

The USA proved how spirited of a side they were against Egypt. The emotions on the face of captain Landon Donovan seemed to explain that nothing was over yet until the final whistle. Indeed, the USA have past the test and are now paired alongside Spain to contest for a place in the final.

Bob Bradley, who described this tournament as a rehearsal for the World Cup next year, didn’t tip his team as favorites at all. But after miraculously guiding them to the semifinals of this tournament, wouldn’t he care to get as far as he can?

It will be interesting to see whether the USA have really learned from their many mistakes against Brazil. How will they fair against the best in the world, Spain? Can they pull up a shock?
